The Cavan Hill Water Treatment Plant
Major works to address seasonal drinking water discolouration in Dundalk will take place in 2026, Fianna Fáil TD for Louth Erin McGreehan has confirmed.
The works will proceed as part of the Cava Hill Water Treatment Plant Upgrade after Uisce Éireann approved permanent upgrade works expected to commence later this year.
Deputy McGreehan said water discolouration has been a concern in Dundalk for a long time and said no one should have to question the quality of their drinking water.

“People need confidence that when they turn on the tap, the water is clean, clear, and safe. This investment is overdue, but it is welcome, and it must be delivered without delay," she said.
The Fianna Faíl TD said that althout short-term measures have helped, the planned upgrade to the Cavan Hill Plant will have lasting effects on Dundalk's drinking water.
Uisce Éireann’s Ian Walsh said he is looking forward to getting to ground on the project.
“We are delighted to confirm that the Cavan Hill Water Treatment Plant Upgrade will move forward in 2026.These works will ensure we can deliver long-term improvements to water quality for the communities served by Cavan Hill.
“The design of the project has been progressing since the pilot proved successful, so once procurement of a contractor is complete, we will be in a good position to start the works and deliver for our customers.”
