Fresh call for new train station in Louth

A proposal for a new railway station in Louth was raised this week in the Dáil

A proposal for a new railway station in Louth was raised this week by Fine Gael TD Paula Butterly, highlighting what she said is the urgent need to address growing demand in the region.

Deputy Butterly emphasized that with only two train stations currently serving the county, both are increasingly overcrowded as Louth continues to expand. She stated that “it is time to start having a conversation about a third railway station.”

The Louth TD noted that land has already been zoned in Drogheda, making it a logical location for an additional station north of the town.

At the same time, she urged consideration of a brownfield site situated midway between Dundalk and Drogheda, stressing the importance of long-term planning to meet future transport needs for the county and surrounding areas.

Responding to the proposal, Deputy Seán Canney acknowledged the growing demand and confirmed that the government is now in a phase of growth and investment.

He remarked that the idea of a new train station “is well worth merit” and pledged to look forward over the coming years to ensure the necessary investments are made. The Minister also noted that his two colleagues are fully supportive of this initiative.

“Over the last year I have been actively engaging with all stakeholders who could help in getting a new railway station for County Louth and Minister Canneys remarks signals a significant step in advancing discussions on improved rail infrastructure for County Louth” said Deputy Butterly.
