Fianna Fáil Senator Alison Comyn has condemned damage caused to the newly laid pitch at Oriel Park during Friday night's 1-1 draw between Dundalk and Drogheda United.
The damage was caused when flares were thrown from the Drogheda United fans onto the new artificial pitch leaving extensive damage.
A 12 year-old boy was also injured after being struck by one of the flares.
Senator Comyn, who is Seanad spokesperson for Sport, said she "utterly condemns the violence and vandalism" that took place during last week's Louth derby.
As a result, Minister for Sport Patrick O'Donovan has announced that funding for astro-turf pitches across the League of Ireland has now been paused.
Senator Comyn said she hopes the "full force of the law is meted out to those mindless thugs who carried out this attack".
She said the new pitch was an important investment in youth and community sport.
"The actions of a few Drogheda United fans have not only damaged the club’s facilities, but your own reputation," she said.

Both clubs issued a joint statement condemning the vandalism saying:
"Rivalry is part of what makes fixtures between Dundalk FC and Drogheda United FC so special. But it must always remain passionate, respectful and safe.
There is no justification for actions that put lives at risk or damage facilities used by young people and the wider community.
Both clubs will fully cooperate with An Garda Síochána in relation to any investigation and will engage constructively with the FAI disciplinary process.
Dundalk FC is currently assessing the full extent of the damage caused, and appropriate steps will be taken in response."
