Louth County Council receive funding boost for works to rural roads

Louth County Council have received a funding boost for works to non-public rural roads and laneways. 

The funding of over €370,000 comes under the Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) and was announced by Minister of Rural and Community Development Dara Calleary. 

The funding goes towards works not normally maintained by local authorities, such as non-public roads leading to important community amenities such as graveyards, beaches, piers, mountains, etc.

Local authorities are responsible for identifying and prioritising roads for improvement works under the scheme, in consultation with residents/landowners.

Households/Landowners must cover between 10%-15% of the estimated costs of eligible roads.

Minister Calleary said: “This scheme will improve hundreds of rural roads and laneways across the country and is a vital source of funding for non-public roads not normally maintained by local authorities.

The Minister said the programme has only been launched in late February due to adverse weather conditions that would make works more difficult to complete.
