Transition Year students from Ardee Community School
Transition Year girls from Ardee Community School brought the energy to DkIT for this year’s ex-HER-cise@DkIT event on campus.
This initiative, which coincides with Sport Ireland’s Women in Sport Week, is designed and delivered by the Health & Physical Activity programme team, and aims to promote and celebrate the involvement of girls in sport and exercise, not only through being active, but through careers in coaching, leadership, officiating and governance.
The event aligns with Sport Ireland’s vision for Women in Sport by highlighting the many pathways available to girls and women within the sporting sector.
The theme of this year’s Women in Sport Week was #SameEnergy and the Transition Years certainly approached the variety of activities with vitality.
The event was kindly sponsored by Dole Ireland, who provided healthy options to fuel the participants throughout the day. To kick the day off, participants picked up a breakfast smoothie from the Dole Ireland Smoothie Van, setting the tone for a fun and energetic day ahead. Participants then took part in a Girls in Sport Quiz and Educational Workshop, where they explored topics including the importance and benefits of physical activity, as well as key aspects of female health such as menstrual health and breast health.
Throughout the day, the Transition Years had the opportunity to try a range of fun activities, including Field Based Fitness Analysis with the 4th year Health & Physical Activity students, Pilates with DkIT lecturer Noeleen Gregory and Crossfit with SKF Crossfit Dundalk. They wrapped up the day with a visit to the DkIT Sport Campus where they got to see the state-of-the art facilities and engage in some fun, high-energy team building challenges.

Fiona Hackett, Lecturer in Health and Physical Activity in DkIT said:
“It was fantastic to welcome the Transition Year students from Ardee CS to DkIT for ex-HER-cise@DkIT during Women in Sport Week. Days like this are about creating positive experiences around physical activity and helping girls realise that there are so many ways they can stay involved — whether that’s playing, coaching or studying sport, health and exercise.”
Undergraduate students from the BSc (Honours) in Health and Physical Activity degree programme at DkIT assisted in the delivery of the event. The programme aims to educate a variety of professionals in the areas of health, physical activity, and wellbeing. Graduates from this programme attain the skills necessary to assess, plan, promote and evaluate lifestyle interventions and physical activity programmes that will enhance the quality of life of individuals that they work with.
