Omeath is being 'left behind' amid calls for EV charging points

Fine Gael councillor John Reilly has called on Louth County Council to install an electric vehicle charging point in Omeath, saying the village is being left behind despite major regeneration.

“Omeath has been transformed in recent years and is now a key stop on the Carlingford Greenway.”

“Yet there is still no EV charging point in the village, which makes no sense,” he said.

He said visitor numbers have increased significantly and that more tourists are travelling in electric vehicles.

“We are promoting Omeath as a tourist destination, but without EV infrastructure we risk losing visitors.”

“People need somewhere to stop, charge, and spend time locally,” he said.

Cllr Reilly said the growing popularity of electric vehicles and the climate crisis make action urgent.

“If we are serious about tackling climate change and planning for the future, councils must provide the right infrastructure.”

“An EV charging point in Omeath is essential, not optional,” he said.
