Cllr Sheridan has urged residents and landowners along the Dundalk-Carrickmacross road to review updated plans

Local Councillor John Sheridan has urged residents and landowners along the Dundalk-Carrickmacross road to review updated plans for a 3km upgrade of the R178 road in Knockbridge.
The Fianna Fáil councillor said that "following consultation last autumn in Knockbridge, new maps have been drafted with more precise plans on the road route and layout.
"These new maps are subject to a fresh consultation period from March 30 to April 17, 2026. It is very important that road users, local residents and landowners see these plans and speak with the consultants about any potential impact. "
"I have spoken often about the need for upgrading the R178 and there has been momentum building in recent years to develop plans. This year €530,000 is in the County Council roadworks programme to advance the early stages of this upgrade plan for the R178."
Cllr Sheridan explained that "the specific corridor for this upgrade is a three kilometre stretch from the Stone Trough junction at Mullabohy, to the Castlering bridge over the river Fane.
"This will also include a new bridge over the Fane, realignment of junctions at the Ballyoran Road, Little Ash junction beside the former Cluskeys Pub as well as the Stone Trough junction itself becoming staggered. The scheme will also include a segregated walk and cycle track"
"This is part of the R178 Dundalk to Cavan strategic regional route scheme. I have also highlighted the need for Ballykelly junction and Essexford Junction to be upgraded and will continue to highlight these into the future."
According to Cllr Sheridan, the updated plans are available on the Louth County Council consultation portal from 30 March 2026.
