Porsche has set a new Guinness World Record with its latest Taycan GTS model.
Completed in Levi, Finland, the record saw the Taycan GTS complete a continuous drift of 17.503 kilometres or just over 10.8 miles. With driver Jens Richter behind the wheel, that meant a total of 132 laps of continuous oversteer lasting a period of 46 minutes.
An initial attempt saw the Porsche team struggle with an ice track that was melting away quicker than expected but, with a switch to short ice spikes for the tyres and falling evening temperatures, the conditions allowed for the record-breaking run to go ahead.
As a result, the Porsche Taycan GTS exceeded the previous record for the longest uninterrupted drift of an electric car on ice of 14.809 kilometres, or just over 9.2 miles.
The car was also equipped with GPS measuring equipment that could record distance travelled, as well as driver inputs such as steering wheel actions and their use of both accelerator and brakes.
This latest completed challenge means that the Taycan now holds four record certificates, including one set in 2023 for the greatest altitude change made by an electric car, or another from 2021 where the Taycan set a new record for the fastest speed driven by an electric vehicle in an enclosed building. It saw the car reach a top speed of 103mph inside an exhibition hall in New Orleans, USA.
