Hyundai has taken the covers off the eagerly-anticipated Ioniq 3 electric hatchback.
The Ioniq 3 will be Hyundai’s answer to Volkswagen’s new ID.3 Neo and the Kia EV3 and sits between the Inster and Ioniq 5 in the brand’s line-up.
Its exterior will use Hyundai’s ‘Art of Steel’ design language and boasts the company’s signature pixel LED headlights. The side profile features a bold kick-up rear window along with a swooping coupe-style roof and wedge-shape tailgate.
Inside, Hyundai refers to the cabin as a ‘Furnished Space’ approach with lots of room thanks to the flat floor and long wheelbase, while the Ioniq 3 is the first Hyundai model in Europe to feature the firm’s new Android-based ‘Pleos Connect’ infotainment system.
A lot of the trim used throughout the cabin is made from recycled and bio-based materials and the boot space is extended further by the ‘Megabox’ which is a deep storage bin located under the false floor to give an overall 441-litre capacity.
The car sits on Hyundai’s ‘e-GMP’ platform and comes as standard with 400-volt architecture to allow ultra-rapid charging speeds, taking 29 minutes to go from 10 to 80 per cent. However, Hyundai has not revealed DC charging speed capabilities at this stage.
There will be two battery options: The ‘Standard Range’ is a 42.2kWh unit mated to an electric motor that produces 145bhp and 250Nm of torque, while the manufacturer claims the car can travel a distance of up to 214 miles. The ‘Long Range’ car is paired to a 61kWh battery with an electric motor to make 133bhp and has the same torque as the smaller unit, though it can take the car up to 308 miles between trips to the plug.
Prices and specifications for the Ioniq 3 are expected to be revealed in due course when the car goes on sale next year.
