Two previously unheard Stephen Sondheim songs to be played

The first official recordings of two unknown songs written by the late American composer Stephen Sondheim are to be played in a new podcast.

Sondheim, who died in 2021, wrote the lyrics to musicals including West Side Story and Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

The podcast, Loving You: The Untold Sondheim, has been created by his close friends Martin Milnes and Peter E Jones, with each episode exploring different aspects of his life.

The podcast will include the first official recordings of two unknown Sondheim songs, performed by Milnes.

One of them, No Sad Songs For Me was written in 1950 as a homage to Sondheim’s favourite movie star, Margaret Sullavan.

Also featured in the podcast is an excerpt from the 1951 song The Party Of The Stars, paying further tribute to Sullavan.

The series also features Dame Julie Andrews, Dame Judi Dench and Mia Farrow among others and will be released on March 5.
