A stark warning has been issued about the dangers posed by swimming in canals across the country amid warm weather.

The warning comes as exams end and teenagers especially take to canals in Offaly and across the country to relax and swim with friends.

Waterways Ireland warned against swimming in canals due to "hidden dangers."

In a statement, they said: "Canals were not designed for swimming and can be extremely dangerous to swim in. Dangers include sudden depth changes, slippery banks which makes exiting difficult, floating and sunken debris which can cause injuries or entrapment, and limited visibility.

"Swimming in canal locks is especially dangerous - they may appear calm but conceal many hidden dangers. Deep water and strong currents can pull swimmers under."

Parents are urged to warn their children against such activities, especially in the wake of State exams when teenagers seek to unwind locally.
