A major investigation is underway following a stabbing incident at Renmore Army Barracks in Galway on Thursday night.

Gardaí have confirmed that officers, including members of the Garda Armed Support Unit, responded to the incident, on the eastern side of the city, at approximately 10.45pm.

"A man, aged in his 50s, received a number of stab wounds during the incident. He was taken to University Hospital Galway for treatment of injuries that are serious but not life-threatening," said a garda spokesperson.

While gardai have not disclosed any further details in relation to the victim, it's being widely reported that he is an Army Chaplain.

A male youth, aged in his teens, was restrained by members of the Defence Forces following the incident and later arrested by gardaí at the scene.

He is currently being detained and questioned at a garda station in the North Western Region.

Gardai say the scene is currently preserved and that a technical examination will be carried out this Friday by the Divisional Scenes of Crime Unit.

Investigations are ongoing and any witnesses are being asked to come forward.
