A teenager armed with a weapon entered the grounds of a secondary school in Galway city earlier this week before assaulting a student in front of terrified children and staff.
The Irish Mirror reported that the incident took place at Coláiste Muire Máthair, formerly St. Mary’s College, on Wednesday afternoon. It was also reported that the attacker was a former student at the school.
Witnesses told the Irish Mirror that the teenager “rushed” the grounds of the school wielding a large metal bar, which he used to assault a student in a brutal attack. In the panic, witnesses reported that they thought the attacker was wielding a sword.
The victim was reportedly injured, but it is unclear whether he required hospital treatment in the wake of the attack.
In a statement, local gardaí confirmed that they were called to deal with the incident, and are still investigating.
"Gardaí responded to reports of an incident at a premises in Galway on Wednesday morning, 4th September 2024. Investigations are ongoing at this time," a garda spokesperson said.
