Gardaí swap patrol car for tractor to get medication to snowed-in elderly Irish couple

Gardai went the extra mile, literally, to ensure an elderly Limerick couple received their medication from the pharmacy.

Garda Mike Fitzgerald, who played hurling for Limerick in the late 2000s, swapped his patrol car for his trusty Zetor this Tuesday.

It was thanks to the quick-thinking of Garda John Clifford, based in Murroe, who learned locally that a couple in Doon needed assistance.

Garda Clifford contacted Garda Fitzgerald, who was off-duty, and told him to get the engine running in the Zetor. 

Garda Clifford travelled over to meet Garda Fitzgerald, who resides in Doon, and they headed up the Reenavanna Hills in the tractor with medication.

Garda Fitzgerald knew the way like the back of his hand despite the heavy snow.

The gardai met with the Faviers and had a good chat about GAA as Mr Favier is related to Kerry football star Gavin White and Garda Clifford hails from Kerry.

Bruff-based Inspector Gearoid Thompson praised Garda Fitzgerald and Garda Clifford for going the extra mile in the snowy conditions.

“It is a very worrying time for many, especially the elderly, living in rural areas.

"We’re here to help in any way we can,” said Insp Thompson.
