Kildare County Council has rejected a planning application by mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor for a six-bedroom house with a cinema and swimming pool near Straffan.

McGregor wanted to demolish an existing detached five-bedroom dwelling to make way for the new structure.

The development was planned for properties: The Paddocks and 5 Castledillon Lower.

The plans included a two storey-and-a-basement building with balconies, covered terraces, roof lights, a games area, a bar, car parking, and a ramped driveway.

Kildare County Council had sought further information about the proposal but ultimately made a decision to refuse planning permission after considering the application in fully.

Explaining its decision, the Council said the proposed development was contrary to the County Development Plan which had designated the site location as a sensitive landscape in the River Liffey Landscape Character Area and was vulnerable to new developments.

Planners also said that a new proposed access road would lead to 'intensification of traffic movement' in the area and 'endanger public safety by reason of traffic hazard or obstruction of road users.'

McGregor can appeal the Council's decision to An Bord Pleanála if he chooses to do so.
