Gardaí are investigating incidents of criminal damage and endangerment to vehicles that occurred on the M7 Limerick to Dublin motorway.

Shortly after 7.30 pm last night (Wednesday), gardaí responded to reports of stones being thrown at passing vehicles on the motorway at Castlecranna, Co Tipperary, approximately half-way between Birdhill and Nenagh.

"Several heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) were damaged in the course of the incident.

"No injuries were reported. No arrests have been made to date. Investigations are ongoing," said a garda spokesperson.

Minister of State at the Department of Justice Niall Collins described the incidents as a "despicable attack on the country's critical transportation industry".

"This a very serious matter. I commend the drivers involved for their reactions to these awful shocks because if one driver loss control - understandably due to the fright - there could have been a multiple vehicle traffic collision.

"Thousands upon thousands of euros of damage were caused and delays caused by these vandals.

"I urge anyone with any information to contact gardai so the perpetrators are arrested and face the full rigours of the law," Minister Collins concluded.

Gardai in Newport, Co Tipperary are investigating.
