The untimely death of 19-year-old Brendan Stone of Barndarrig, County Wicklow has shattered the local community.

The much-loved young man tragically passed away on Friday, 21 February, leaving behind his parents Peter and Patsy and six siblings.

Brendan was a talented GAA and rugby sportsman, playing under-20 football for his home county Wicklow and also under-20 for his local rugby team Wicklow RFC.

Both of his teams have led the touching and heartbreaking tributes following his unexpected loss. Knockananna GAA shared on social media that "Brendan was a fine young man and talented footballer."

They added that all his team mates at Knockananna GAA spoke ever so highly of him, saying: "He was full of laughter and chat at training sessions and always had a laugh or craic of some sort going."

Wicklow RFC also shared: "Brendan has played rugby in Wicklow RFC since he was six years of age and was a proud member of Wicklow’s first ever under 20’s team. Brendan was a brilliant young rugby player and a fearless competitor.

"He played the game of rugby with skill, balance, speed and ferocity but always with a smile on his face. He was a lovely, kind and friendly young man with a wonderful sense of humour and an infectious smile."

Indeed, Brendan's passing has led to hundreds of messages online to pay tribute to the "lovely young lad" he was. Many have taken to share their fondest memories and admiration of Brendan on his RIP.ie notice, as well as to express their deepest sympathies with the Stone family.

One person kindly wrote: "Brendan was an amazing player pleasure to have played along side him in minor as he was a amazing team leader and great character." Another said: "His infectious smile and memory will be forever in our hearts."

As the hundreds of tributes point out, Brendan was a "beautiful, bright and active young man" who will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Brendan's funeral arrangements are due to be announced later.
