The tragic incident unfolded when a group of teenagers got into difficulty swimming in Lough Swilly on Saturday evening

A large-scale search operation unfolded in Buncrana, County Donegal on Saturday evening after a group of teenagers got into difficulty while swimming in Lough Swilly.

Sadly, the body of an adult teenager was recovered from the water late on Saturday night and a second teenager who was rescued in the search operation has unfortunately died in hospital in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Another teenager was involved and was able to swim to the shore.

The teenagers were aged between 16 and 19.

The Rescue 118 helicopter and three lifeboats were involved in Saturday's searches while a number of ambulances stood by on Buncrana Pier.

The emergency situation had unfolded around 4pm after a member of the public raised the alarm that the teenagers had gotten into difficulty.
