Intoxicated driver also arrested for speeding was found with cannabis in the vehicle

Gardaí in Cork were kept busy when monitoring the roads this past weekend

Gardaí in Cork were kept busy when monitoring the roads this past weekend when they pulled over a driver travelling southbound on the M8 motorway in Mitchelstown.

Initially being pulled over for breaking the speed limit, gardaí found the vehicle to be operating on a shocking speed of 167km/h on Sunday evening, May 11.

However, it soon came to the gardaí's attention that this wasn't the only law that the driver was breaking.

It was discovered that the operator of the vehicle was found to be in possession of cannabis.

As well as this, gardaí confirmed that the driver was also intoxicated behind the wheel, resulting in their arrest with an upcoming court appearance to follow.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána in Cork said, "While driving, keep in mind that speed is the biggest contributory factor in road deaths in Ireland according to the Road Safety Authority.

"Arriving late is better than not arriving at all," they concluded.
