Gardaí have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses after a pedestrian died following a road crash in County Meath.

The fatal road traffic collision, involving a car and a pedestrian, happened on the R135 Dublin Road at Ashbourne at around 7.10pm on Saturday.

According to gardai, the female pedestrian, aged in her 60s, was pronounced deceased at the scene.

"The woman's body has since been removed to the mortuary at Our Lady’s Hospital Navan, where a post-mortem examination will take place in due course," said spokesperson.

Gardai say the male driver and passenger of the car, both aged in their 20s, were conveyed to Connolly Hospital Blanchardstown for treatment of injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening.

Motorists are being advised the road is currently closed, pending technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators, with local diversions in place.

It is expected to remain closed until mid-afternoon this Sunday.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to this incident to come forward and any road users who may have camera footage and who were travelling in the area between 6.30pm and 7.30pm on Saturday are asked to make the footage available.
