An elderly man in his 80s has tragically died during a house fire in Westmeath, gardai have confirmed. 

Gardaí are investigating the death of the man aged that occurred at a residence in the Gilbertstown area of Castlepollard, Co. Westmeath at approximately 1am on the morning of Wednesday, 4th of June 2025.

Gardai have confirmed that the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body was removed to the mortuary at Mullingar Mortuary where a post mortem examination is due to take place.

Investigations are ingoing at this time.

This is the second house fire to have occurred this week, as it quickly follows the house fire that occurred in Galway on Tuesday June 3, that saw Sonia 'Sunny' Jacobs dead along with her caretaker.

These two tragedies have shocked and devastated many across the country as tributes are paid to all who have lost their lives so tragically.
