Irish holidaymakers warned as extreme heat expected in popular tourist destinations this week
As primary and secondary schools across the country are officially on their summer holidays later this week, droves of Irish people will be heading abroad to soak up the sun in Europe.
However, there might just be too much sun in the coming days according to weather man Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather.
The weather man has warned on social media that extreme temperatures are expected to hit Europe this weekend which could mean parts of Portugal and Spain could see temperatures rise to a scorching 44 degrees.
Heading for Spain, Portugal or France this weekend? Prepare for some hot weather, could hit up to 44c in parts of Portugal and Spain and up to 40c in parts of France.

Yes I know it’s summer and yes these countries do get hot but this is a little early to see these temps and us… pic.twitter.com/k65zkbwilq
France will also be impacted by the blast of extreme heat, with some parts anticipated to see highs of 40 degrees.

This is somewhat unseasonable for this kind of heat, as O'Reilly shared on X: "Yes I know it’s summer and yes these countries do get hot but this is a little early to see these temps and us Irish aren’t built for that heat."
Indeed, if you have waited to take your holidays now you might be in for a very hot one and it is worth taking precautions when it comes to heat stroke and sunburn given the extremely high temperatures.
For those of us at home, Ireland will not be hit with this blast of heat. Instead, Met Éireann has so far forecasted an unsettled few days ahead with a mixture of sunny spells, wind and rain. So far, the weekend does look uncertain but temperatures look to reach up to 22 degrees.
