A member of An Garda Síochána "went above and beyond" to help one woman who lost her phone at Dublin Airport recently before boarding a plane to Poland.

In a post shared on An Garda Síochána's social media page, they said this phone was particularly special for the woman, Aleksandra, as it contained precious photos, voice notes and videos of her grandfather who had just recently passed away.

None of these were backed up, meaning that the only way of retrieving those sentimental memories was by getting the phone back.

The phone was so important to Aleksandra that she was willing to fly back to Ireland from Poland to search for it after she realised it was lost.

An Garda Síochána explained that Aleksandra had just been visiting Ireland when she lost the phone and unfortunately she was "already airborne when she realised that she had left it behind."

Luckily, a woman found the phone and managed to send a text from it to Aleksandra's fiancé telling him that she would hand it in for them. However, she didn't happen to mention where she would hand it in and the phone's battery eventually died.

When she returned to Ireland, airport staff told Aleksandra that the phone couldn't be located and so she tried the Garda Station near Terminal 1 where Garda Grace Roddy stood in to help.

An Garda Síochána said: "Garda Grace Roddy was on overnight duty at the public desk and having heard the story, was determined to help. Garda Roddy went 'above and beyond to assist' doing all the rounds in the airport to find it, but to no success.

"Not giving up, she decided to make her way back to the gate that Aleksandra had flown out from only days previous. Tucked away out of sight in a drawer at one of the airline’s desks, was the phone.

"Garda Grace Roddy had asked Aleksandra to sit tight in the departures hall hoping to return to her with only good news. And here they are."

The post ended: "The phone with all the much cherished photographs, videos and audio clips was returned to Aleksandra on what happened to be her 30th birthday - her grandfather no doubt making this very important birthday wish come true."
