Unlicensed moped driver learns hard lesson as gardaí deliver some home truths

Gardaí have not publicly confirmed if the moped was seized

Gardaí in Monaghan stopped the driver of a unique vehicle this past weekend after witnessing several road law violations.

On Saturday, August 9, members of An Garda Síochána were conducting patrols in the town when they came across a motorist wearing no helmet while driving a moped.

Upon being pulled over by gardaí, it was revealed that the driver did not have a license to be operating the vehicle.

Along with this, the moped itself did not have any insurance.

According to on-duty authorities, the driver did not believe they needed to wear a helmet or possess a valid license and/or insurance due to the moped being electric and not operated off of petrol.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána in Monaghan town said, "Whether it's electric, petrol or diesel, its an mechanically propelled vehicle and requires insurance!"

Gardaí have not publicly confirmed if the moped was seized.
