An explosive device, cocaine, crack cocaine and €5,500 in cash was recovered as gardai swooped on a Traveller site in Limerick.

As part of ongoing investigations into the activities of an organised criminal group, Gardaí from the Limerick Crime Unit, supported by multiple agencies and specialist units, conducted a planned operation at the Childers Road halting site on Tuesday, September 30. 

During the course of the operation, a number of residential properties and adjoining lands were searched.

An improvised explosive device (IED) was discovered and safely dealt with by the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team.

Gardai say they seized a number of items of evidential value, including €5,550 in cash, quantities of cocaine and crack cocaine and a mobile phone device.

In addition, a male in his 20s was arrested in connection with an investigation into the unlawful discharge of a firearm.  This occurred on September 3 last at Childers Road, Limerick.

He was detained under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 at a Garda station in Limerick and later released pending a file to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Investigations are ongoing.
