Why October can feel tough and how to protect your mental health this Autumn

October can feel challenging for many especially with the Irish winter fast approaching. With shorter days and shifting routines leaving people stressed. Alice O Brien CBT specialist explains that it’s not the situation itself that affects us, but how we perceive it.

Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) suggests examining negative thought patterns and replacing them with balanced thinking.

A helpful tool is the “Five P’s”: People, Purpose, Pleasure, Pace, and Peace. Connecting with meaningful people, finding a sense of purpose, enjoying small pleasures, adjusting your pace, and carving out moments of calm can help maintain mental wellbeing even in darker, busier months.

Light exposure, movement, and mindful practices are also vital. Short walks, yoga, or Pilates can boost mood, while reviewing sleep habits and vitamin D intake supports energy and mental resilience.

By consciously managing routines and thoughts, it’s possible to navigate October’s pressures without feeling overwhelmed, and even enjoy the beauty of the season.
