Two men have been arrested and charged in Cork after Gardaí seized a substantial amount of drugs and cash following searches carried out on Tuesday, December 30.

Gardaí from Cork City Divisional Drugs Unit seized €700,000 of suspected illegal cocaine, €60,000 cannabis and over €40,000 cash, during the course of searches in Douglas.

This led to two men (aged in their 30’s and 40’s) being detained pursuant to Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act 1996, at Garda stations in the Co. Cork area.

Both of the arrested men have since been charged, and are expected to appear before a special sitting of Cork District Court on Friday morning, January 2.

Follow-up searches were also conducted by the Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB) in the Dublin 14 area, on Wednesday, December 31.

These searches resulted in the seizure of an additional 0.5 kg of suspected cannabis with an approximate value of €9,000, along with €4,000 cash. The seized drugs are subject to analysis by Forensic Science Ireland.

The searches were carried out as part of Operation Tara, a national anti-drugs strategy aiming to disrupt, dismantle and prosecute drug trafficking networks at all levels.

A Garda spokesperson has said that investigations are still currently ongoing.
