Tipperary rugby history made in Clonmel High School CBS v Thurles CBS clash

History was made on Monday, December 19 when the High School CBS and Thurles CBS played their first rugby match against each other.

U19 Munster Schools Senior Cup Qualifier Final
High School CBS 17 Colaiste Pobal Bantry 38

The High School was in the mix in this Senior Cup qualifier final up to half time but tries for Bantry either side of the break proved to be the championship moments securing victory for the west Cork School.

Bantry scored the first try following a good move down the wing. The High School came storming back with two tries of their own. The first was a fantastic team effort from a rolling maul following a lineout allowing Jack Lane to score. The second followed a cracking line break by Sean McEntagert to set up TJ Slattery to touch down under the posts. Slattery kicked the conversion to give the High School a 12-7 lead mid-way through the first half. Indeed, the High School nearly extended their lead only for David Coyne to be held up on the Bantry try line.

Bantry scored next to level the match at 12 all. Crucially they scored their third try at the end of the first half to leave the score 19-12 at the break.

Within seconds of the restart, the High School conceded a fourth try following a defensive slip. The conversion extended Bantry’s lead to 26-12.

The High School now had to chase the game but struggled to get a foot hold in Bantry’s half. The Cork school crossed for two more tries but the High School had the last word with Liam Maher scoring a fine try before the final whistle.

Bantry progress to play Glenstal in the opening round of the Munster Schools Senior Cup and we wish them the best of luck.

The High School will now focus on the Mungret Cup, welcoming Midleton CBS to Clonmel for the quarter final on this Friday, January 13

U14 Friendly
High School CBS v Thurles CBS

History was made on Monday, December 19 when the High School CBS and Thurles CBS played their first rugby match against each other. The venue was the High School’s 4G rugby pitch on a cold but sunny December day. It was a very entertaining game with both teams displaying great skill and having lots of fun. The spoils went to the High School but to be honest rugby was the real winner!

An interesting footnote to this match is that the High School CBS coaches Ciaran Burke and Brendan Mullan, Thurles CBS coach PJ Mulcahy and referee Joe Sheehan, Munster Rugby’s Club and Community Officer, are all High School past pupils!
