Jack Kennedy, Clonmel Commercials and Tipperary
Jack Kennedy, who has won the 2022 Annerville award for Gaelic football, played a key role in a County Senior Football Championship campaign that saw Clonmel Commercials underline their status as Tipperary’s most dominant football force in recent years. The Clonmel club did so by winning their third county title in four years, and a fourth in six years.
They faced their first serious test in the semi-final against old rivals and neighbours Moyle Rovers, and found themselves four points in arrears after 22 minutes.
The performances of their more experienced players, including Jack Kennedy, helped haul Commercials back into contention. They went on to record a relatively comfortable victory, with Kennedy scoring the late penalty that put gloss on the scoreline for Commercials, who repeated their south final success over the same opponents.
They again made a slow start in the county final against surprise packets Upperchurch/Drombane. However, once they got into their stride there was only going to be one winner, with Jack Kennedy deservedly claiming the man of the match award, as he dictated the play with some pinpoint passes.
One of three brothers on the team, the Tipperary player turned in another powerhouse performance in the Munster Club Championship quarter-final against Nemo Rangers, as the Clonmel team comprehensively defeated the Cork champions in their own backyard of Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
Their provincial campaign unfortunately came to an end in the semi-final against Newcastle West, but there’s no doubt that they’ll be back in the shake-up for honours in 2023.
Jack Kennedy and the other award winners will be presented with their Annerville awards (sponsored by Bulmers) by the Tipperary United Sports Panel at a ceremony at the Talbot Hotel Clonmel next Saturday night, January 21.
