Katie Bergin of Moyne Athletics Club was the toast of Tipperary last weekend after claiming two national titles at the National Athletics Track & Field Championships in Dublin.
It was a fantastic weekend for Katie and her coach Martin Flynn, as the sprinter claimed the 60 metres and the 200 metres titles in the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena last Saturday.
The 60mts was her first competition and with two heats involved she was positioned in Lane 4 of Heat 2 and showed a clean pair of heels to her competitors by winning the heat in a time of 7.85 seconds to be the fastest qualifier through to the final.
Less than an hour later she appeared on the track for the final, positioned in Lane 3. Right from the starters gun she powered down the track and despite the short distance involved was clear of her competitors at the finish to be crowned National Champion in a new personal best time of 7.71 seconds.
Bergin retained her at this level which is rare, but Katie duly done this on Saturday having clocked 7.75 seconds in 2021 when winning over the same distance.
Rest and recovery were the order of the day as Katie then had to focus on the 200 metres, where she had finished in the runner up spot a year ago, but her focus remained and having secured Lane 6 in the second heat she produced yet another fastest qualifier position for the final with a time of 27.27 seconds.
Lining up for the final, the pressure was on but Katie ran a very controlled and efficient race to cross the line in first place in 25.25 seconds and secure her second national title of the day.
