Ursuline TY students Gillian Aherne, Kate Fitzgerald and Rosa Ryan who exhibited their project, Restrictions on Addiction at the BT Young Scientist 2023 at the RDS
The Ursuline was represented at the BT Young Scientist Competition this year by TY students Rosa Ryan, Kate Fitzgerald and Gillian Aherne.
Their project, which entered in the Social and Behavioural Science category, was called, Restrictions on Addiction and explored possible links between gaming and gambling in young people and adolescents.
The evidence they gathered through research seemed to point to a connection between video gaming, online gaming and an early introduction to the world of betting.
On the second day of the exhibition, they met Minister for State at the Department of Justice, James Browne.
He was particularly interested in their project and findings, having paved the way for stricter gambling legislation himself.
So he was very impressed with their investigation of their needs to be tighter restrictions on online games, video games and gambling advertisements in order to protect children from developing an addiction too early in life.
