Carrick-on-Suir’s Comeragh College is one of 26 schools across Ireland chosen to take part in a sports programme promoting ladies Gaelic football.
The school has hosted its first workshop for the Lidl #SeriousSupport Schools Programme, which is supported by the Ladies Gaelic Football Association and delivered by the Youth Sports Trust.
The initiative aims to reduce the drop-off rate in sport participation among girls aged 11-14 years.
Comeragh College teachers Samantha Lambert, former captain of the Tipperary ladies football team and Tipperary football star Aishling Moloney are involved in rolling out the programme around the country.
The school’s female students enjoyed their first workshop on Wednesday, January 18.
Dr Orlagh Farmer, Cork LGFA player, visited to mentor the students. She gave a motivational talk on the importance of sport especially for young girls to keep them fit, healthy and active.
She also reflected upon her sporting career and said the most rewarding element of being involved in a team was the friendships she developed. The successes were an added bonus. The students then took part in a workshop on football skills.
Comeragh College principal Kevin Langton said the school was endeavouring to offer equal opportunity in sport for its female students and encouraging physical activity among them through this programme.
“It is probably one of the fastest growing sports in our school. It’s great for the students in terms of their social skills, being part of a team and building community spirit,” he said.
The programme will be run at the school over a number of weeks and Mr Langton said students are already looking forward to the next session.
