Tipperary jockey makes headlines in New Zealand with Wellington Cup success

Holycross jockey Joe Doyle following his Wellington Cup triumph in New Zealand

Tipperary jockey Joe Doyle, who has gone to New Zealand for the winter, made an instant impression when he rode a double on his first day’s racing.

The 26-year-old Holycross man went down under in November and recently announced himself by landing a double at Rotorua.

This included the Grade 3 NZ Campus Of Innovation and Sport Wellington Cup on Leaderboard.

According to the website LoveRacing.NZ, the horse responded to a brilliant ride from Doyle, who said “He felt great during the week and we knew we needed the rain to come and thankfully it did.

“He travelled beautifully and we didn’t go a mad gallop, just even and he just kept fighting up to the line. These are definitely the horses you want to ride and it feels good to be riding for such good people.

“I’m very grateful to the people in New Zealand for how they have looked after me. I’m very fortunate and very grateful”.
