Photographer and medical doctor the subject of Tipperary People and Places series

William Despard Hemphill was born in Clonmel in 1816

The subject for the February lecture in the Tipperary People and Places series is Clonmel photographer and medical doctor William Despard (WD) Hemphill.

The lecture takes place in The Source, Thurles next Tuesday February 21 at 7pm. 

WD Hemphill, son of Samuel Hemphill, originally of Springhill, Killenaule was born in 1816 in Clonmel.

After qualifying as a doctor, he returned to Clonmel and settled with his wife in Brighton Place and later in Oakville. He is best known for his interest in photography and his publication Stereoscopic Illustrations of Clonmel.

At next week's lecture in The Source, Dr Karol Mullaney Dignam, author of WD Hemphill: Irish Victorian photographer will discuss
Hemphill and his contribution to Irish photography.
