Thurles councillor apologises over Moyross comment

Independent Cllr Jim Ryan

Thurles councillor Jim Ryan has apologised for his remarks about Moyross.

Cllr Ryan was raising issues about a Thurles estate at last week’s sitting of Thurles/Templemore Municipal District. He compared Stradavoher Court to Moyross in Limerick, sparking outrage on social media.

The Limerick Post on Tuesday quote Cllr Ryan as saying: “I apologise unreservedly. I didn’t mean to cause any hurt or any grievance to anyone.

“It was an off-the-cuff remark at a council meeting. I wasn’t talking about Moyross. I was talking about an estate in Thurles.”

“It will never happen again, and I know now from over the last couple of days the great work that has been carried out in the Moyross community by the residents, committees and various organisations.”

The Moyross Residents’ Alliance tweeted on Sunday that they accepted Cllr Ryan’s apology and would like to move on. In their tweet they said: “Cllr Jim Ryan. Apology was good enough - We think it’s only fair we end the matter and remove the articles.

"We hope people learn from this if they speak badly of our greatly improving community in any way, shape or form, prepare for us to call them out. We wish Jim well going forward."

Since 2013, Moyross has been part of Limerick Regeneration, a strategy to ‘revitalise the communities’.”

The Moyross community have themselves been strong advocates for development in the area.

In 2021, the Moyross Partners launched a successful campaign to convince the government to release the funds for the Coonagh to Knockalisheen Distributor Road.

The Build-Our-Road campaign garnered national attention, and within weeks, work on the road had started.
