Congratulations to Ashling O’Loughlin, Moya Brennan and Holly Byrne who are National Finalists in the Certified Irish Angus Beef Schools Competition 2023 and are now on their way to Croke Park.
They will present their project and findings to judges from ABP, Keepak and Certified Irish Angus on Friday, March 31, and hope to win five prize Angus calves.
The group covered topics such as crop rotation, carbon sequestration, soil pH, cover crops and slurry and chemical fertilizers, and anaerobic digesters, all in an effort to find out how farmers can manage soil sustainably.
The trio ran a colouring competition for Ursuline First Years. They returned to their old Primary School, St Kieran’s National School in Johnstown, to speak to Fifth and Sixth class about the Certified Irish Angus Beef Schools Competition, their research to date and discuss with them the important contribution women make in the Agricultural sector.
At present, the girls are busy working on their final presentation and stand, which they hope will impress the judges. They are following in the footsteps of last year’s Irish Angus Beef group and the TYs of 2021, who both came home from Croker with a trailer of calves that they have successfully raised to adulthood.
Fingers crossed for Holly, Moya and Ashling, who have done great work to date on raising awareness and finding out how to keep beef farming sustainable into the future by preserving and protecting the soil.
