Sam Bennett was pipped in the sprint finish to the opening stage of the Paris-Nice race
Tipperary cyclist Sam Bennett made a strong start to the Paris-Nice race when he finished second in yesterday's opening stage to La Verrière.
The Bora-hansgrohe rider looked set for victory heading into the final two kilometres, but was caught in the race for first place by a very fast-finishing Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep).
Ahead of today's second stage, which covers 163.7 kilometres from Bazainville to Fontainebleau, the Carrick-on-Suir man said “The final 30 kilometres were quite tough but I felt really good, which gives me confidence for Monday’s flat stage”.
Former world champion Mads Pedersen (Trek-Segafredo) finished very closely behind Bennett for third.
Bennett finished second and third on the final two stages at the recent UAE Tour.
He claimed his first victory of the year at January’s Vuelta a San Juan Internacional (2.Pro) in Argentina.
