The Clonmel High School Under 15 rugby team advanced to the final of the Cleary Cup following a hard-fought win against Villers School from Limerick on our 4G rugby pitch last Thursday.
The visitors got off to a great start with a try after three minutes in the corner by their impressive winger. The touchline conversion was perfect to give Villiers an early 7-0 lead.
The High School replied quickly following some good interplay between backs and forwards. Anthony Fitzgearld touched down and Jack O’Brien kicked the conversion to level the match, much to the delight of the large home support on the sideline. In similar style, the High School extended their lead when Alex O’Keeffe scored a try to push them 12-7 ahead.
Yet Villiers came roaring back with a try of their own to level the match once again at 12 points apiece. Just before halftime Mbekezeli Masuku made a powerful run to score the High School’s third try, giving them a 17 -12 lead at the break.
The second half was a tight affair, and to their credit Villiers levelled the match once again with a good try. Cool heads prevailed on the High School team as they worked their way down the pitch and PJ Walsh scored in the corner to put them back in front 22-17.
When Anthony Fitzgearld crossed for his second try of the day, four minutes from time, the High School held onto the ball for the remainder of the match to win 27-17.
It was a hard-fought win for the High School that will stand to them in the final, which will be played in a few weeks against the winners of Abbey CBS or Waterpark College/Newtown School.
