Tipperary's Garda chief has issued a renewed warning to the county's motorists to take steps to prevent catalytic converters being stolen from their vehicles.

Tipperary/Clare Garda Division Chief Superintendent Colm O'Sullivan advised the public to park their vehicles up against a wall to make it more difficult for thieves to get at the exhaust emissions control device that are popular among criminals because of their resale value.

He issued the warning at the latest meeting of Tipperary's Joint Policing Committee in Thurles Municipal District's offices last Friday.

The Chief Superintendent said the theft of catalytic converters was an issue last year because of the high price of metals. While metal prices have gone down, thefts of these devices were still taking place, he told the meeting.
