Rubbish dumping on a site next to Carrick-on-Suir’s St Mary’s Cemetery was highlighted by a councillor at Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District’s monthly meeting

Cllr Kieran Bourke said the dumping was taking place on three quarters of a field set aside for an extension to the cemetery.

He called for action to be taken to clean up this eyesore, whether this involved writing to the owner of the site, who was technically responsible even though they didn’t dump the rubbish there.

The Fianna Fáil councillor brought the illegal dumping to the attention of council management while also highlighting large potholes on a lane at the back of Connolly Park leading to St Mary’s Cemetery.

The potholes were so large that if you drove a load of blocks down the lane, the load would fall off, he complained.

In response, District Engineer Willie Corby said he visited the laneway and saw the dumping Cllr Bourke referred to.

He promised to follow up on both issues to ensure they were sorted out.
