Tributes were paid to retiring Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District Engineer Willie Corby at the district's monthly meeting.
Mr Corby updated councillors on road, bridge, footpath works, housing repairs and other infrastructure projects in Carrick-on-
Suir Municipal District for the last time at their February meeting in Carrick-on-Suir Town Hall.
Councillors wished Mr Corby well on his retirement and paid tribute to his work as the District Engineer for Carrick MD and thanked him wholeheartedly for his help.
Carrick-on-Suir MD Cathaoirleach Cllr David Dunne said Willie had been a pleasure to work with and always had a “sympathetic ear” for councillors making representations on behalf of constituents. The Sinn Féin councillor also thanked him for postponing his retirement for a number of months due to staffing issues in the council.
" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mullinahone Cllr Kevin O'Meara said Willie Corby had been “more than helpful” to him since he was elected to the council in 2018.
He urged the council to appoint his replacement as soon as possible and that his list of works in each community be passed on to the new District Engineer.
“From our point of view we have been struggling over the last number of months with staffing.
“It's a pity when Willie gave his notice in a year ago that there was not some overlap with the senior engineer that will be taking over his job.”
Mr Corby thanked the district's councillors and staff for all their assistance over the years and noted that there past few years have been very positive for Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District.
“The roads programme budgets have increased for the last five years, which is all positive for the town (of Carrick) and the district. Here is hoping more will come along in the following years,” he added.
Carrick MD Director of Services Brian Beck stressed to councillors that the filling of the district engineer post was a priority for the council
He understood this senior engineering post has been offered to a candidate. A process had to be gone through before this appointment was confirmed.
“We will try and get somebody as soon as we can but I can't give a time line in relation to that,” he added.
