Carrick-on-Suir AC’s first placed team of Derek Walsh, Dermot Gorman, Eugene O’Keeffe and Keith Fraher received the Dundrum Challenge Cup and medals from County Chairman, Owen Fanning.
The Tipperary Intermediate Road Championships took place at Ballyneale on Sunday week last, March 12. Our club had 11 members taking part between the two races.
In the women’s 4k race we had good performances by Gráinne Brennan 8th in 17:06, Eileen O’Connell 14th in 17:52 and Sinéad Dunne 20th in 23:30, giving the Carrick-on-Suir AC team fifth place on 42 points.
Special thanks to Sinéad Dunne for stepping in at the last moment to be the third athlete to create a scoring women’s team for the club.
In the men’s 8k race, we had Dermot Gorman lead out from the start and hold the lead and finish with a 14- second gap over second place to win in 26:22. This is a great season for Dermot, who also won the men’s novice road 6k championship race at Moyne three weeks previously.
Our club was also the first placed team, receiving the Dundrum Challenge Cup. Following our race winner Dermot Gorman, we had Derek Walsh taking the individual third place bronze medal in 26:49, Eugene O’Keeffe was fifth in 29:19 and Keith Fraher 10th in 30:06 to see the team win on 19 points, 27 points ahead of second.
Supporting our winning team and putting in some fine performances were Eoghan Coughlan 22nd in 32:07, Benny Hahessy 25th in 32:27, Killian O’Sullivan 36th in 34:10, Dermot Lanigan 40th in 36:43 and John Carroll 41st in 37:10.
