Professional kickboxer fined for growing cannabis plants

Thurles District Court

A professional kickboxer has been fined for growing cannabis plants by Thurles District Court.

Patrick Joseph Hanley (27) of 32 Lacey Avenue, Templemore, was convicted of the cultivation of cannabis.

The court heard that gardaí carried out a search warrant on Mr Hanley’s home on February 1, 2021.

There they found two cannabis plants and “a small amount of MDMA,” the court heard.

Colm Morrissey, the solicitor for the defendant, told the court that his client used the drugs for pain management following an operation for carpal tunnel.

He said his client had no addiction issues but was willing to engage with a programme like restorative justice. Mr Morrissey said his client had learned “a very harsh lesson.”

However, Judge Alec Gabbett said there was little point as the man had no addiction issues.

“I think that horse has bolted,” said Judge Gabbett.

He fined the defendant €300 for growing the plants and struck out the possession charge.
