The former Governor of Mountjoy Prison, John Lonergan, was guest of the Abbey School recently to facilitate two workshops for both students and parents. Teachers and parents from St. Anne’s School also attended.

John also carried out a workshop with the ‘Inside Out’ team, who are continuing to promote crime and disability awareness within our community, in collaboration with Ann Bradshaw, HSE Disability Services and Inspector Des Bell, An Garda Síochána.
Well done to the Wellbeing team for organising this event and to Sgt John Kingston for supporting and attending. John Lonergan was Governor of Mountjoy Prison until his retirement in 2010.

A native of Kilmoyler, Bansha , John joined the Irish Prison Service in 1968. He also served as Governor of the high security prison in Portlaoise from November 1988 until May 1992.
John argues that there is a direct link between crime and social and economic deprivation and believes that the biggest challenge facing us today is not the economy but how we are going to create a just, inclusive and cohesive society based on the core values of justice, equality fairness and compassion.

A very effective and gifted communicator, John has been the most high-profile person ever associated with the prison service in Ireland. The Abbey School was delighted to have John as their guest for this important day.
There were lots of activities to celebrate Abbey Wellbeing Week 2023 held in the school throughout the week and well done to all the students for their participation.
