Tipperary County Council has been notified of 224 Notices to Quit (NTQs) since June last year.

That is according to a presentation given by the housing section’s Cora Morrissey at last week’s special council sitting. Currently, there are 46 live NTQs being addressed by Tipperary County Council.

TENANT-IN-SITU

Last year, the Department of Housing introduced a tenant-in-situ scheme for local authorities. This means that if a landlord is selling, the council may purchase the house to keep the tenant from becoming homeless.

Of the 224 NTQs issued since June 2022, the council purchased 47 houses and have made offers on another four.

A further 31 are being considered.

“After Dublin city and Louth County Council, we are probably the local authority that has purchased the most units since that circular came out in 2022,” said Ms Carr.

A total of 147 were not purchased, according to the presentation. Reasons for the council not purchasing were the landlord was not selling, the property was in too poor a condition or not value for money.

In some cases, the NTQ was revoked or expired, and some tenants left voluntarily or found their own accommodation.

Additionally and according to Tipperary County Council Chief Executive Joe MacGrath, the Government has put in place a targets for the purchasing of HAP properties.

Nationally, this is 1,500 units in 2023.

When asked by Cllr Kieran Bourke, Mr MacGrath said the council were happy with the resources provided by the Government.

“We always want a bit more and that's fine but when you go looking they are made available,” said Mr Macgrath.
