The generosity of the people of Clonmel has been reflected in the presentation of a cheque for €9,000 from Clonmel Rotary Club to South Tipperary Hospice.
The money is the proceeds of the club’s annual Remembrance Tree held before Christmas.
Trees were located at O’Connell Street and Dunnes Stores, Davis Road, where shoppers remembered loved ones by placing ribbons on the trees.
Despite difficult financial times for many, the people of Clonmel and visitors to the town responded with huge generosity to the appeal.
Mayor Pat English added €500 from the Mayor’s Fund to the final amount to allow club president Paul Davey present the final total of €9,000 to Hospice representatives Maud Shee and Maura Cooney at a recent ceremony in the Rotary headquarters in Cluain restaurant.
Mr Davey said the club was delighted to continue to support such a worthy cause as the Hospice home care nursing programme and he paid tribute to Hospice for their outstanding work.
He also thanked the people of Clonmel for their wonderful support for the Remembrance Tree, one of the club’s most important and successful projects each year.
Their generosity allowed the club to make such a substantial presentation to Hospice.
Mr Davey also paid tribute to project chairman Tom Duggan and his team, as well as the many volunteers who manned the trees in the days leading up to Christmas.
On behalf of Hospice, Maud Shee thanked the Rotary Club for their continued support.
She said that the annual presentation from the Remembrance Tree fundraiser was a vital source of income for the service and she assured the club, and all those who contributed to the collection in the run-up to Christmas, that the money would be well spent and put to the best possible use for those availing of the Hospice services.
