Residents in two housing estates in Carrick-on-Suir are seeking removal of parts of their green areas to create more car parking spaces ,Carrick-on-Suir Municipal District’s monthly meeting heard.

Cllr Kieran Bourke asked council management if it had a budget this year to do these minor projects at Clairín Close and Orchard Crescent in Carrick-on-Suir?  He pointed out  the residents of Orchard Crescent have  waited three years for this work to be carried out.

He also appealed to the council to carry out more remedial works  in the Castle Heights estate in Carrick, which the council has taken in charge after the estate was left with a series of outstanding issues with footpaths, paving, ramps and other infrastructure.

Cllr Bourke said he was acutely aware the budget for Carrick town road works has been cut by 20%. This funding was redeployed to tackle  rural roads  in very poor condition.

District Engineer Denis Power said part of the issue with Castle Heights was  there was no developer bond funds left   to finance this type of job. He indicated he would see if Irish Public Bodies funding could be used to pay for  this project.

On the other two estates, he said the council had to be careful not to remove too many green areas  as   planning guidelines set out a  target   that at least 15%  of the area of a development site be public open space.
