Clonmel Triathlon member Laurence Begley takes to the water to launch the event on Sunday, May 14 in Clonmel
Organised by the dedicated race committee of Clonmel Triathlon Club, our very first Triathlon will take place at 9 am on 14th May 2023 at Suir Island. After hosting several very successful Camida Clonmel Duathlon events over the past couple of years this year we have decided to add the swim, Camida Clonmel Triathlon. We are delighted that David Anchell and his team at Camida have come on board with us again this year.
A Triathlon is an endurance event consisting of a swim, bike and a run. It is a continuously timed event. The person to complete the course in the shortest time is declared the winner. Some equipment is required to do a Triathlon. A good pair of runners, road worthy bike and helmet, a wetsuit and goggles are the key items. Suitable clothing for weather on the day is advisable. A certain level of fitness is required as the swim is 750m, bike is 20km and the run is 5km.
Race headquarters for this event is Suir Island in the old bridge area of Clonmel, here athletes can sign in and set up transitions. Some parking is available on Suir Island for athletes on race day on a first come first serve basis. We are grateful to Tipperary county council for use of this.
SWIM: The race will start at 9am from Clonmel Rowing Club with a 750 m downstream swim and athletes will be expected to walk the 750m to the start line. Athletes can expect a fast swim and will exit the water at suir island where they will head for transition.
BIKE: Exiting transition athletes will be directed left to start the 20k cycle. The course is 10k out along the wood road up Knocklofty Hill and on to Keating’s cross before turning around and returning to transition. The bike course is mostly flat and fast but Knocklofty Hill will get the heart rate up a little., but it is short and you get to come down on the way back.
RUN: Runners on and athletes will this time turn right out of transition and run the blue way along the banks of the River Suir. The run is completely flat and very fast. Out and back course so athletes will be directed to turn around and head to the finish line which will be at Gashouse Bridge next to offices of Camida (sponsors).
At the Finish line athletes will have some refreshments provided.
We expect to have 150 athletes take part on race day and in and in advance like to thank all who have committed to helping out on race day. Lead bike, lead car, bike marshals 10 kayaks, four motorized boats, Garda and Civil Defence and not forgetting 40 club marshalls.
Thanks also to all who have played a part in organizing the event. To mention a few, Tipperary County council for their enthusiasm and expert advice and in particular to CAMIDA for their support allowing us to stage Clonmel s very first Triathlon.
Excellent prizes are on offer and entrants will also receive a goody bag and post- race food. A DJ will keep things rocking before and during the race. All in all it promises to be a great day for race entrants and spectators alike.
Online registration available. Please try to register in advance.
Clonmel Triathlon Club was formed in October 2014 by a local group interested in the sport of triathlon. The idea was to put in place swim/bike/run training to facilitate people from Clonmel and surrounding areas with a similar interest and also put in place a solid foundation for the sport to grow in the future.
