Tipperary minor footballers travel to bring home the Darryl Darcy cup

The Tipperary minor footballers are on a roll this summer. The spring time yielded win after win and now they prepare to make the trek this evening to Mallow to take on Limerick in the Phase 1 final of the Munster minor football championship.

This Tipperary football team have been a joy to follow. They beat Clare and Waterford in Thurles. In their first match they played Limerick. I travelled to Rathkeale hearing Limerick were good and Tipp would be up against it but from the first ball, Tipp dictated proceedings. Clever ball in to the forwards and a dominant half back line from Clonmel Commercials (Michael Connellan, Billy Tierney and James O’Keeffe) working the ball upfield with purpose has ensured Tipp call the shots.

The most pleasing aspect has been the skill levels and the composure on the ball. Clean catches and accurate passes are valued. The players look focused and tuned in. A real positive vibe comes from the field when this Tipp team are playing.

Down in Rathkeale Tipp kicked long range points and worked the ball into good positions. The full forward, Ronan O'Brien, hit a second half goal to seal the win that evening. He is out of the starting team this time around but supporters will look to  Liam Freaney and Louis Coughlan in attack as well as Billy Tierney who kicked a couple of sweet long range frees from the deck last time the sides met.

Tipp won't have it all their own way as Limerick were without their captain last time out and took time to adjust. Evan Curry was their best player and is one to watch for the future. If you can at all get to Mallow this evening, there will be a cup on offer.

The Darcy family put up the Darryl Darcy cup which commemorates the late Darryl Darcy, a Tipperary senior and U21 player who was killed in a car crash as he made his way to training back in 2008. Tipperary will once more have to give their all and that is all supporters will ask of them tonight. Throw in at Mallow is at 7pm.

The game is live on Munster GAA TV and the link to watch is here: https://page.inplayer.com/MunsterGAA/index.html
