A Section 3 (Dangerous Structures) notice has been served on the owners of the former Clonmel Arms Hotel by the environment section of Tipperary County Council.

Under Sections 2 and 3 of the Local Government (Sanitary Services) Act 1964, the council is entitled to serve notice on property owners, where in the opinion of the council a property is dangerous, requesting them to carry out remedial action to make the property safe.

Failure to comply with the notice can result in the matter being referred to the courts.

News of the notice being served on the Clonmel property was relayed to the members of Clonmel Borough District by District Administrator Carol Creighton in her report to a meeting of the Borough District.

The Clonmel Arms Hotel, a once thriving business, closed in November 2005. The building has fallen into a state of disrepair and dereliction since then and is an eyesore in the centre of the town.

The site straddles O’Connell Street, Sarsfield Street, Quay Street and Blue Anchor Lane.

The building was put up for sale a year and a half ago.

Planning permission for a 114-bedroom hotel on the site was granted almost four years ago.

Dining, bar, conference and function facilities, as well as a basement car park and leisure centre, are included in the plans.
